Online student athlete gets ready for 2014 hockey showcase in Philadelphia

Westlake Village, CA (PRWEB) September 30, 2014

Colton Rhodes, Oaks Christian Online High School (OCO) senior will play in the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League showcase tournament in Philadelphia, PA, on October 11-13th. Colton says, “I always try to play to the best of my ability and get some exposure, but the whole team has the attitude of going in for the win. Last year our team scored enough points to come in 3rd at the end of the season. This year we're hoping to make it to the championship.” Colton has played Defense in the Midget Major U18 Tier 1 Elite Hockey League (T1EHL) on the Los Angeles Junior Kings AAA team for the past 4 years. T1EHL is the nation's premier amateur hockey league and provides exposure for their players to Major Junior, NCAA Hockey and the NHL, amongst other professional leagues.

Colton's love for hockey started at the age of seven where he played pick-up games at his local rink. A trip to see older hockey players a few years later at a rink in Ontario, CA, solidified his passion and drive for the sport. In past years, Colton has traveled to Michigan, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New York, North Dakota, Colorado, Vancouver, and other locations. This year, his showcase tournaments will take him to Dallas, Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Jose and perhaps the championships.

Even though Colton has had big accomplishments, such as making the national select camp in 2012 from over 60 candidates and competing in Green Bay, Wisconsin, at the national championships in 2014, his travel schedule makes doing well in class and preparing for college a challenge. Ultimately Colton would like to attend a Division 1 school where he plans to study business, play hockey and see if he could be recruited by the USHL or NHL. He says, “I'd love to play for Notre Dame, Wisconsin or Minnesota, but honestly I'd be honored to play for a Division 1 school where I could get a good education while playing hockey. It would be a privilege.”

Colton has found that being an Oaks Christian Online High School student has helped reduce the stress of completing his schoolwork with maintaining his busy travel schedule. Colton works as hard off the rink as on by taking courses such as OCO, NCAA approved, online AP English Literature and online Physics. His work ethic continues with his commitment to community service as well, where he has conducted clinics for summer campers at the Desert Ice Castle rink in Cathedral City, CA. Colton says, “OCO is great as far as how the schedule works to help keep me on pace. I really like how the classes are set up. It has been unbelievable; with my hockey schedule, I have been able get my work done ahead of time when I need to.”
