Ashland drives innovation and safety at Label Expo

Wilmington, DE (PRWEB) September 10, 2014

Ashland Specialty Ingredients, a commercial unit of Ashland Inc. ASH, is showcasing new technologies in digital printing and flexible packaging designed for improved safety, superior performance and enhanced efficiencies at this year's Label Expo in Rosemont, Illinois. Expanding on industry-leading regulatory expertise Ashland shares its Fit-For-Use approach with full transparency to ensure compliance within the market.

Safecure™ A320/B440 and Purelam™ A9500/B9240 laminating adhesives
Ashland is introducing a portfolio of laminating adhesives that further the safety of food in flexible packages while also advocating a global risk-assessment approach. Safecure A320/B440 and Purelam A9500/B9240 laminating adhesives are just one part of a larger company-wide safety and sustainability initiative to lead the flexible packaging industry in adopting Ashland's “Fit-for-Use” risk assessment approach. The adhesives, which are solvent-free and can be cured at room temperature, also help converters reduce overall costs and operate more efficiently.

Safecure A320/B440 laminating adhesive provides excellent safety performance from migration for all food types, in combination with fast cure and UV stability. This product can help lower the overall cost of the package because it allows sealant film down-gauging. It is the first solvent-free laminating adhesive on the market which received Food Contact Number 1434 issued by the Food and Drug Administration in July.

Purelam A9500/B9240 laminating adhesive has the lowest aromatic amine migration on the market today without sacrificing operator ease of use or lamination performance. This product enables enhanced manufacturing efficiencies via high line speeds (more than 1300 feet per minute with no misting) and fast cure (slit in as few as three hours with full bond development in 24 hours). Purelam A9500/B9240 laminating adhesive is also recommended for use in digitally printed flexible packaging.

Purethane™A-1090 and Solvester™EA2130-65/110 laminating adhesives
Purethane A-1090 laminating adhesive is a new water-based urethane laminating adhesive that enables improved performance in many applications with conventional solvent-based inks, has excellent heat performance as required for thick gauge sealing films and zipper installations, and also performs well in freezer applications. It is the recommended adhesive for digitally printed flexible packaging.

Solvester™EA2130-65/110 laminating adhesive is an efficient solvent based urethane adhesive that offers very fast slitting (less than 4 hours after lamination), with outstanding aggressive ingredient resistance while maintaining an excellent pot life (more than 8 hours) and excellent UV stability. Compatible with most ethyl acetate-based laminating adhesives, Solvester EA2130-65/110 laminating adhesive has exceptional clarity in final laminates and is recommended for various high heat applications (retort or microwave). Solvester EA2130-65/110 laminating adhesive provides excellent safety performance from migration for all food types.

Ashland Inc. offers comprehensive adhesive and coating solutions for label and flexible-packaging constructions, including pressure-sensitive adhesives; solvent-free, solvent- and water-based and UV-curable laminating adhesives; and print-receptive and overprint coatings. "Ashland offers extensive and innovative products in addition to regulatory compliance and analytical support services for narrow web label converters participating in or seeking to participate in flexible packaging applications," said Lisa Newland, product manager.
