Dillard's, Inc. DDS (the “Company” or “Dillard's”) announced operating results for the 13 and 26 weeks ended August 2, 2014. This release contains certain forward-looking statements. Second Quarter Results

Dillard's reported net income for the 13 weeks ended August 2, 2014 of $34.5 million, or $0.80 per share, compared to net income of $36.5 million, or $0.79 per share, for the prior year second quarter. Comparable stores sales increased 1% for the quarter.

Dillard's Chief Executive Officer, William T. Dillard, II, stated, "Although our 1% comparable store sales increase led to a profitable quarter, we are somewhat disappointed in the bottom line performance. We are pleased with our inventory management during the quarter and with our ending inventory position."

26 Week Results

Dillard's reported net income for the 26 weeks ended August 2, 2014 of $146.1 million, or $3.36 per share, compared to net income of $153.7 million, or $3.30 per share, for the prior year 26-week period. Included in net income for the prior 26-week period ended August 3, 2013 is a net after-tax credit totaling $4.4 million ($0.09 per share) comprised of the following three items:

  • A $7.6 million after tax gain ($0.16 per share) related to the sale of an investment
  • A $1.0 million after tax credit ($0.02 per share) related to a pension adjustment
  • After-tax asset impairment and store closing charges of $4.2 million ($0.09 per share)

Net Sales - 13 Weeks

Net sales for the 13 weeks ended August 2, 2014 were $1.475 billion and $1.480 billion for the 13 weeks ended August 3, 2013. Net sales include the operations of the Company's construction business, CDI Contractors, LLC ("CDI").

Total merchandise sales (which exclude CDI) for the 13-week period ended August 2, 2014 were $1.461 billion and $1.459 billion for the 13-week period ended August 3, 2013. Total merchandise sales remained unchanged on a percentage basis for the 13-week period ended August 2, 2014. Sales in comparable stores for the period increased 1%.

Sales trends were strongest in juniors' and children's apparel followed by men's apparel and accessories. Sales were weakest in the home and furniture category. Sales trends were strongest in the Central region, followed by the Eastern and Western regions, respectively.

Net Sales - 26 Weeks

Net sales for the 26 weeks ended August 2, 2014 were $3.026 billion and $3.029 billion for the 26 weeks ended August 3, 2013. Total merchandise sales for the 26-week period ended August 2, 2014 were $3.000 billion and $2.989 billion for the 26-week period ended August 3, 2013. Total merchandise sales remained unchanged on a percentage basis for the 26-week period ended August 2, 2014. Sales in comparable stores for the period increased 1%.

Gross Margin/Inventory

Gross margin from retail operations (which excludes CDI) declined 33 basis points of sales for the 13 weeks ended August 2, 2014 compared to the prior year second quarter. The decline resulted primarily from increased markdowns. Consolidated gross margin for the 13 weeks ended August 2, 2014 declined 20 basis points of sales compared to the prior year second quarter. Inventory decreased 2% at August 2, 2014 compared to August 3, 2013.

Selling, General & Administrative Expenses

Selling, general and administrative expenses were $400.5 million (27.2% of sales) and $398.2 million (26.9% of sales) during the 13 weeks ended August 2, 2014 and August 3, 2013, respectively. Increased payroll expense was partially offset by decreased insurance and advertising expense.

Store Information

At August 2, 2014, the Company operated 278 Dillard's locations and 18 clearance centers spanning 29 states and an Internet store at www.dillards.com. Total square footage at August 2, 2014 was 50.5 million.
