The growth of sexual promiscuity without appropriate sex and relationship education is directly related to increasing levels of depression and frustration in men, according to new research by dating consultancy Suave Lover.

Benjamin Ritter of Suave Lover states, “Sexual promiscuity and sexual desirability has become a deciding factor in popularity and social acceptance among younger adults. When youth view sex as a means of self-validation, you find an increase in risky sexual behavior or when sexual activity is absent an increase in depression and frustration.”

Ritter has found that state programs for sex education have not kept up with the needs of our youth. The Guttmacher Institute State Policies in Brief: Sex and HIV Education published July 1, 2014 highlights the lack of proper sex and relationship education throughout the United States; 37 states allow for medically inaccurate sex education, only 18 states require teachers to provide information about contraception, only 13 states require information on the negative outcomes of teen sex and pregnancy, and only 20 states require that sex education include information about skills for avoiding coerced sex and on making healthy decisions around sexuality. Many states in the U.S. still lack program requirements regarding sexual precautions, risks and general physiology.

Current research indicates the need for greater sex education requirements but recent findings by Suave Lover indicate an increasing need for social and relationship education that focuses on issues involving peer and social pressures, potential stigmas, sexual decision making, and empowering sexual self-awareness.

“In our line of work we continually find ourselves dismantling assumptions and re-educating men regarding slut-shaming; negativity surrounding women's freedom of sexual expression, and the need for validation from women. The tragic case of Elliot Rodgers, who was deeply psychologically disturbed, painfully illustrates the confusion and frustration regarding sexual experience,” notes Ritter. “His videos and manifesto referenced concepts I regularly hear from men; the concept of an alpha male, what it means to be a gentleman, deserving/earning sexual access privileges, feelings of rejection and loneliness. This frustration and depression derived from the need for social and sexual validation is becoming an alarming issue for young men today, who have few resources available to constructively deal with these emotions.”

Suave Lover aims to provide various resources to guide men through a confusing social and sexual culture, while advocating for more focused sex education along with broader social and relationship education.
