Recognition honors Blumofe for theoretical accomplishments positively impacting computing

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., June 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Akamai Technologies, Inc. AKAM, the leading provider of cloud services for delivering, optimizing and securing online content and business applications, today announced that Dr. Robert D. Blumofe, executive vice president for Akamai's Platform Division, will be awarded the 2013 Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice award from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Blumofe will receive the award with Charles E. Leiserson, professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), at the ACM Annual Awards Dinner in San Francisco taking place on June 21st.

The Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award honors specific theoretical accomplishments that have had a significant and demonstrable effect on the practice of computing. The award is accompanied by a prize of $10,000 and is endowed by contributions from the Kanellakis family, with additional financial support provided by ACM's Special Interest Groups on Algorithms and Computation Theory (SIGACT), Design Automation (SIGDA), Management of Data (SIGMOD), Programming Languages (SIGPLAN), the ACM SIG Projects Fund, and individual contributions.

The ACM is honoring Blumofe and Leiserson for developing an efficient randomized "work-stealing" scheduling protocol along with the Cilk Framework, a small set of linguistic primitives that help program multithreaded computations. The conceptual framework that both Blumofe and Leiserson designed for work stealing has been deployed on millions of machines and has made an impact on daily computing operations running on Java and Microsoft Visual Studios. The Cilk parallel programming framework is being incorporated within the Intel C/C++ compiler, GCC and other compilers.

"Together with Charles, our goal was to transform theories into practical frameworks that function across multiple platforms," said Blumofe. "This recognition, alongside the industry's positive reaction and widespread adoption, affirms the utility of our work."
