OMA Reports a 13.3% Increase in May 2014 Passenger Traffic

MONTERREY, Mexico, June 4, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mexican airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte, S.A.B. de C.V., known as OMA OMAB OMA, reports that terminal passenger traffic at its 13 airports increased 13.3% in May 2014, as compared to May 2013. Domestic traffic increased 14.3%, and international traffic increased 6.4%.

Of total May traffic, 97.8% was commercial aviation and 2.2% was general aviation.

Domestic traffic increased in all thirteen airports in May. The most noteworthy increases were in Monterrey (+11.2%; +50,834 passengers), Torreón (+37.4%; +11,636), Culiacán (+10.2%; +10,072), Ciudad Juárez (+18.3%; +9,941), Reynosa (+32.2%; +9,285), Chihuahua (+13.6%; +8,807) and San Luis Potosí (+60.5%; +8,056). Monterrey traffic increased principally on the Mexico City, Cancún, and Querétaro routes. Torreón traffic increased on the Mexico City, Cancún, and Guadalajara routes. Culiacán increased traffic on its Tijuana, Mexico City, and Monterrey routes. Ciudad Juárez traffic rose on the Mexico City, Tijuana, and Guadalajara routes. Reynosa traffic increased on the Mexico City, Cancún and Guadalajara routes. Chihuahua traffic increased on the Mexico City, Monterrey, and Cancún routes. San Luis Potosí increased traffic on its Cancún and Mexico City routes.  In May, TAR started operating the Acapulco – Guadalajara and Acapulco – Toluca routes; Aeroméxico opened the Monterrey – Aguascalientes and Monterrey – Cancún routes; and Interjet started flying the San Luis Potosí – Mexico City route.

International traffic increased in eleven airports in May. Traffic increased most significantly in Monterrey (+6.7%; +5,117 passengers), as a result of increased traffic on the Atlanta route. The most significant reduction in traffic was in Mazatlán (-6.0%; -934 passengers), principally as a result of lower traffic on the Phoenix route.

The number of flight operations (takeoffs and landings) in May increased 5.1% as compared to the same month of last year. The number of domestic operations increased 6.2% and international operations decreased 2.2%.
