Jay Varney, a candidate for Sheriff of Madera County, has received his Master's Degree in Criminology from Fresno State University. Varney, currently serving as the Police Chief of Chowchilla, completed the degree in December of 2013 and participated in the 20th annual Convocation at Fresno State on May 16, 2014. Varney earned a Master's Degree With Distinction due to the fact that he completed the program while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Dr. Toni DuPont-Morales, a member of the faculty of Fresno State's Criminology Department, presented Varney with his Master's Degree hood.

Varney's educational background demonstrates the clear value he places on consistent personal and professional development. Throughout his long and distinguished career, Varney has pursued numerous educational opportunities with the goal of gaining a broader and deeper understanding of the many issues that law enforcement officials frequently face. In addition to his Master's Degree, Varney also holds a Bachelor's Degree from Michigan State, and a graduate certificate in Criminal Justice Education from the University of Virginia which he earned while attending the highly prestigious FBI National Academy. Chief Varney also holds an Executive Certificate from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

The Madera County Sheriff candidate has been able to pursue these educational opportunities throughout the course of 30 years in law enforcement. Varney had been a part of police departments in Dallas, Texas, and Lansing, Michigan, before taking over as the Chief of Police in Chowchilla. It should not be surprising that Varney has been able to achieve so many accolades while serving in various leadership positions in law enforcement, as he has consistently demonstrated a capacity and willingness for taking on whatever responsibilities were necessary for the success of the position in which he was working. In fact, Varney served as the Acting City Administrator while maintaining his role as Chief of Police during a tumultuous financial period in Chowchilla from 2009 through 2011.

Varney has frequently proclaimed the importance of focusing on a results-oriented and team-building approach. By maintaining a 4.0 GPA and earning a Master's Degree With Distinction in Criminology from Fresno State, Varney has demonstrated a clear willingness to lead by example as well.
