Court documents indicate that more than 1,200 Biomet hip lawsuits have been filed in the Northern District of Indiana on behalf of individuals who were allegedly injured by the M2a Magnum Hip Replacement System. Plaintiffs who have filed these lawsuits allege that the metal-on-metal M2a Magnum can shed dangerous amounts of toxic metal ions in patients' tissue and blood stream, resulting in metallosis, chronic pain, loss of mobility and premature failure of the hip. These complications often necessitate removal and replacement of the device, according to the complaints.

According to court documents, the Biomet hip replacement settlement proposal was announced in the Northern District of Indiana on February 3, 2014, and could ultimately resolve hundreds of claims involving the M2a Magnum hip. Under the terms of the settlement, plaintiffs who received one of the affected Biomet hip replacements as part of an initial surgery that was rectified more than 180 days after it was implanted would eligible for a base award of $200,000. To participate in the settlement program, plaintiffs must file their Biomet hip lawsuits no later than April 15, 2014.
