Genesee & Wyoming Reports Traffic for March and the First Quarter of 2014

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) GWR today reported traffic volumes for March 2014 and the first quarter of 2014.

G&W's traffic in March 2014 was 167,993 carloads, an increase of 13,916 carloads, or 9.0%, compared with March 2013. G&W's traffic in the first quarter of 2014 was 467,379 carloads, an increase of 17,075 carloads, or 3.8%, compared with the first quarter of 2013. The negative effects of the severe winter weather in the first quarter of 2014 resulted in lower than expected traffic and higher than expected expenses in the first quarter of 2014.

Highlights:

• North American traffic increased 12,849 carloads, or 9.6%, primarily due to increased coal shipments and overhead Class I shipments.
• Australian traffic increased 1,067 carloads, or 5.3%, primarily due to increased iron ore shipments, partially offset by decreased minerals & stone traffic.
• Coal & coke traffic increased 6,389 carloads, or 26.2%, primarily due to increased steam coal shipments in G&W's Midwest and Ohio Valley regions.
• G&W's Other commodity group traffic increased 2,726 carloads, or 48.9%, primarily due to overhead Class 1 shipments.
• Metallic ores traffic increased 1,589 carloads, or 31.1%, primarily due to increased iron ore shipments in G&W's Australia Region.
• Traffic in all other commodity groups increased by a net 3,212 carloads.

Highlights:

• North American traffic increased 14,566 carloads, or 3.7%, and was negatively affected by severe winter weather at most of G&W's North American regions in the first quarter of 2014.
• Australian traffic increased 2,509 carloads, or 4.5%, primarily due to increased iron ore and grain shipments, partially offset by decreased minerals & stone traffic.
• Coal & coke traffic increased 10,743 carloads, or 14.2%, primarily due to increased steam coal shipments in G&W's Midwest and Ohio Valley regions, partially offset by decreased shipments in G&W's Mountain West Region.
• Metallic ores traffic increased 4,062 carloads, or 27.4%, primarily due to increased iron ore shipments in G&W's Australia Region.
• G&W's Other commodity group traffic increased 1,939 carloads, or 12.6%, primarily due to overhead Class 1 shipments.
• Traffic in all other commodity groups increased by a net 331 carloads.

Other

Historically, G&W has found that carload information may be indicative of freight revenues on its railroads, but may not be indicative of total revenues, operating expenses, operating income or net income. Car movements related to railcar switching, including activities at port terminals, are excluded from our carload information as the resulting revenues are classified as non-freight.
