DANBURY, Conn., March 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Cartus Corporation, a leading provider of global relocation services, was honored by United Way of Western Connecticut with its "Corporate Volunteer Award" at United Way's Hometown Heroes Benefit Dinner held March 21 at The Matrix corporate center in Danbury. The award honors Cartus employees who annually dedicate thousands of hours to volunteer outreach efforts—locally and around the world.

"Our employees are always in the forefront when it comes to giving back to the communities where they live and work," said Kevin J. Kelleher, Cartus president and CEO.  "I'm very proud to say that their generosity knows no bounds where charitable endeavors are concerned."

With the leadership of Cartus employees Jeff Buckley and Donna LaForte, who headed the United Way campaign at Cartus headquarters in Danbury for the past eight years, more than $1.5 million has been raised for the needful in local communities.

Among the company's most successful annual fundraising events is the Walk 'n' Roll, in which employees walk circuits around the Cartus property with breaks in between to browse various booth sales. Last year, this multi-part event raised $40,000 in the course of a few hours.

Other annual volunteer efforts include Mustaches for Money, Breakfast with Santa, the King of the Hill race, Volunteer Fair, and collection drives for school supplies, food, toys, clothing, etc.

Under the leadership of Maryellen Canuel, Danbury-based employees have participated for more than 10 years in United Way's annual "Day of Action"; last summer saw 92 employees painting, pruning, and sprucing up parks and other public venues in the western part of the state.

Cartus employees in the company's 20 worldwide offices also volunteered in numerous ways in 2013, as they have for decades. Minneapolis staff collected food and clothing for their city's homeless population; a team in the Singapore office collected 150 bags of clothing for typhoon victims in Mindanao; Chicago staff walked in aid of a cure for MS; and in the UK office, an employee took her first skydive to raise funds for her local ambulance service, while two colleagues made and sold Easter candy to support the search for a cure for motor neurone disease.

Also honored at The Hometown Heroes Benefit Dinner were GE Capital, with a "Corporate Philanthropy Award"; The Rotary Club of Newtown, with a "Community Partner Award"; and Larry Neary of Bridgewater,  CT, with an "Individual Volunteer Award."
