NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the data, cloud and international communications business within NTT NTT, today announced the details of its participation in the Open Networking Summit (ONS) in Santa Clara, CA, highlighting its leading role in software-defined networking (SDN)-based network transformation. NTT Com Senior Vice President of Service Infrastructure Yukio Ito will speak on SDN at NTT Com and collaborative initiatives to accelerate SDN adoption. NTT America's Senior Solutions Engineer Todd Ridgway will give a talk on leveraging SDN to deliver innovative and differentiated cloud services to enterprises. NTT Com will also demonstrate an OpenFlow communications protocol-based system architecture, a high-performance OpenFlow switch, and an OpenFlow validator.

Participation at ONS

At ONS 2014, NTT Com will offer its perspective on the direction and possibilities of new architectures, products and services. “We are honored and delighted to return to ONS as a Visionary Sponsor and share experiences with next-generation SDN technologies,” said Mr. Ito, who is also an Open Networking Foundation (ONF) Board Member and chairman of the Okinawa Open Laboratory. “This is an exciting time for the networking industry, and we look forward to several days of high-level discussions with partners in the expanding SDN ecosystem.”

In a plenary session on Tuesday, March 4, Mr. Ito will talk about how NTT Com is accelerating its development and deployment of OpenFlow/SDN, SDN-enabled services and significant SDN projects underway in Asia/Pacific. In a theater presentation Mr. Ridgway will address how NTT Com is leveraging SDN to deliver innovative and differentiated cloud services to enterprises. NTT Com will also demonstrate 1) A Multiple southbound interface control Platform and Portal system or AMPP, a configurable system architecture that accommodates both OpenFlow switches and command line interface (CLI)-based network devices; 2) Lagopus Switch, a scalable, high-performance and elastic software-based OpenFlow switch that leverages multi-core CPUs and network I/O to achieve 10Gbps level-flow processing; and 3) the Versatile OpenFlow Validator or VOLT, a first of a kind system that can validate flow entries and analyze network failures in OpenFlow environments. NTT Com's booth number is 403.

A Catalyst for SDN Growth

Over the past year, NTT Com has played an instrumental role in promoting SDN, a sector of technology and services that analysts believe is poised for tremendous growth. NTT Com, NEC Corporation and IIGA Co. have jointly established the Okinawa Open Laboratory to develop SDN and cloud computing technologies. The laboratory, which opened in May 2013, has invited engineers from private companies and academic organizations in Japan and other countries to work at the facility on the development of SDN and cloud-computing technologies and verification for commercial use. Study results will be distributed widely to the public.

In September 2013, NTT, NTT Com, NEC, Fujitsu and Hitachi launched the “Open Innovation over Network Platforms” research and development (R&D) project. Also known as the “O3 Project” (for open, organic and optimum), the initiative is based on research consigned via Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and is jointly promoted by the five companies.

The O3 Project is the world's first R&D project that seeks to make a variety of wide area network (WAN) elements compatible with SDN, including platforms for comprehensively integrating and managing multiple varieties of WAN infrastructure and applications. The project aims to achieve wide area SDN that will enable telecommunications carriers to reduce the time to design, construct and change networks by approximately 90% when compared to conventional methods. This will enable service providers to dramatically reduce the time needed to establish and withdraw services. In the future, enterprises will be able to enjoy services by simply installing the specialized application for services, such as a big data application, 8K HD video broadcasting and global enterprise intranet, and at the same time, an optimum network for the services will be provided promptly.

ABOUT ONS

The event is owned and operated by Open Networking Summits, Inc., the only non-profit conference organization committed to furthering the OpenFlow Standard and Software Defined Networking. Founded in 2011, ONS was the first SDN-focused event and the only one created, supported and attended by the inventors of SDN. The Summit is committed to creating a forum that expands the ecosystem, fosters frank discussions and delivers the highest quality content to ensure the entire ecosystem of adopters, vendors, operators, executives and investors can continue to lead the development of the networks of the future.

Open Networking Summit 2014 will be held from March 3-5 at the Santa Clara Convention Center and Hyatt Regency in the heart of the Silicon Valley.
