Southwest U.S. Major-Metro Construction Activity Increased 24.2% in Year-Over-Year Analysis, BidClerk Data Finds

For major-metro regions in the Southwest U.S., including Phoenix-Mesa-Glendale, AZ; Prescott, AZ; Tucson, AZ; Yuma, AZ; Las Vegas-Paradise, NV; Reno-Sparks, NV; Albuquerque, NM; and Santa Fe, NM, the BidClerk Construction Index™ (BCI) reported a 24.2% increase in private and public construction projects that were actively bidding in a year-over-year analysis. Private and public construction activity increased 11.5% and 31.0% respectively. The total value of all the Southwest U.S. Major-Metro projects reported on BidClerk that bid in the 2nd quarter of 2013 was $1,743,860,401.

In a quarter-over-quarter analysis for all construction projects that were actively bidding, the major-metro regions in the Southwest experienced an increase of 7.6%. The BCI found that second quarter 2013 private projects were down (-14.5%), but public construction increased 22.7% compared to the 1st quarter of 2013.

In a year-over-year analysis, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding in the Phoenix region increased 10% compared to a decrease of (-15.4%) reported in the 1st quarter of 2013. In a quarter-over-quarter analysis, the BCI found that Phoenix construction activity increased 14.0% over the 1st quarter of 2013.

Among the high-profile projects bidding on BidClerk in the 2nd quarter of 2013 was the Northern Arizona University Science and Health Building, in Flagstaff, AZ. (1444237 – BidClerk ID.) Valued at $72,000,000, the building is a 120,000 sq. ft. science and health building that includes a laboratory building with offices, classrooms, and lecture halls. The project broke ground in the Spring 2013, with a 23-month construction timeline. The project was designed by GLHN Architects (Tucson) & Richard + Bauer Architecture (Phoenix). The contract for general contracting was awarded to M.A. Mortenson (Phoenix).

In a year-over-year analysis for the Las Vegas region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding increased 28.9%, compared to an increase of 12.9% reported in the 1st quarter of 2013. In a quarter-over-quarter analysis, the BCI found that Las Vegas construction activity was flat (0%), with no change over the 1st quarter 2013.

In a year-over-year analysis for the Albuquerque region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding increased 23.9%, compared to an increase of 3.3% reported the previous quarter. A quarter-over-quarter analysis revealed that combined private and public construction projects that were actively bidding in the Albuquerque region decreased (-10.8%), compared to no growth or contraction reported in the previous quarter.

The regions surveyed by the BCI include Phoenix-Mesa-Glendale, AZ; Prescott, AZ; Tucson, AZ; Yuma, AZ; Las Vegas-Paradise, NV; Reno-Sparks, NV; Albuquerque, NM; and Santa Fe, NM.
