Pennsylvania Major-Metro Construction Activity Experienced a 70.0% Increase in Year-Over-Year Analysis, BidClerk Data Finds

For major-metro regions in Pennsylvania, including Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, PA-NJ; Harrisburg-Carlisle, PA; Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD; Pittsburgh, PA; Reading, PA; Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA; and York-Hanover, PA, the BidClerk Construction Indexâ„¢ (BCI) reported that overall construction that was actively bidding increased 70.0% compared to one year ago. Year-over-year, private construction activity increased 6.0%, while public construction nearly doubled, increasing 96.8%. The data was contained in BCI's 2nd quarter 2013 report.

In a quarter-over-quarter analysis for all construction projects that were actively bidding, BCI's 2nd quarter 2013 report showed that the major-metro regions in Pennsylvania experienced an increase in private construction of 17.7%. Public construction also increased, rising 45.1% compared to the 1st quarter of 2013. The total value of all the major-metro regions in Pennsylvania projects reported on BidClerk that bid in the 2nd quarter of 2013 was $4,300,136,865.

In a year-over-year analysis for the Philadelphia region, combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding increased 48.3%. A quarter-over-quarter BCI analysis revealed that combined private and public construction projects that were actively bidding in the Philadelphia region also increased 40.6% compared to the 1st quarter of 2013. The total value of all Philadelphia projects reported on BidClerk that bid in the 2nd quarter of 2013 was $1,495,029,754.

In a year-over-year analysis, BCI's 1st quarter 2013 report showed that combined public and private construction projects that were actively bidding in the Pittsburgh region increased 164.8%, compared to a 30.5% increase reported last quarter. BCI's quarter-over-quarter analysis also revealed an increase of 37.3% for Pittsburgh's overall construction activity compared to the 1st quarter of 2013. The total value of all the Pittsburgh projects reported on BidClerk that bid in the 2nd quarter of 2013 was $904,786,468.

Among the high-profile projects that BidClerk reported on for the 2nd quarter was the East Suburban YMCA Addition in Plum, PA. (787246 BidClerk ID.) The 30,000 sq. ft. building is an addition to a fitness and wellness center. Construction will start in late July 2013. The architect is RSSC Architecture (Pittsburgh) and the contract for general contracting was awarded to PJ Dick (Pittsburgh).

The Pennsylvania counties surveyed by the BCI include Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, PA-NJ; Harrisburg-Carlisle, PA; Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD; Pittsburgh, PA; Reading, PA; Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA; and York-Hanover, PA.
