There are seventeen graduates from many different career fields. The graduates from the institute will also be honored at the NHPO Conference and Gala in September.

Members of this year's ninth class are: Amanda Flores, Ana Isabel Moreno, Beatriz Ramirez, Belinda Ann Castro, Claudia Ortega Hogue, Eric Torres, Erica G. Alderete, Fabian Acosta, Felicia Hernandez-Gonzalez, Jacqueline Eguiluz, Jannell Robles, Juan Antonio Sorto, Kelly Tucker, Laura Acosta, Linda Montantes, Matthew Jones and Sylvia Vega Royster.

“There is a need for Hispanics to get involved. The Leadership Institute was created to develop more Hispanic leadership within the community to place more Hispanics on city, county and non-profit boards and commissions,” states the NHPO Chair, Jesse Rodriguez. Students are prepared by taking classes in Robert Rules of Order, team building, leadership styles, public speaking, media training and more.

In January of 2009, the NHPO and Houston Community College Southeast Campus came together to create the NHPO Leadership Institute. The program is designed to strengthen communities through educational initiatives and develop professionals with the skill sets, knowledge and opportunities necessary to make these professionals more effective leaders, organizers and motivators within their communities.
