Youtube Trends Map Doesn't Change Industry, May Drive Traffic
Google has unveiled Youtube Trends Map, a new visual map of top videos across the US. Internet video marketer Alex Damon says the tool doesn't provide marketers with any new advantage – but may increase the impact of top-ranking videos.

Google, the owner of Youtube, has unveiled a new way to spot which popular videos are leading the nation. The Youtube Trends Map offers users a visual map of the US populated by top videos in each region. But while the map, which updates in real time, has grabbed a lot of interest from casual users, internet movie producer Alex Damon says that it doesn't really offer anything new to the industry.
Damon is a video project manager for video SEO firm Everspark Interactive, and relies on Youtube to push out content that helps marketing clients gain visibility online. Trends Map is more engaging, according to Damon, but the information it provides is essentially the same as what was offered on an earlier, less visual regional trends page.
“What video professionals really want to know is how our own videos are doing in different regions,” said Damon. “That would let us identify trends and strengthen our content. But with Trends Map, unless you happen to be the number one video in a city, you don't get any useful data.”
Damon says that a more interactive map, that allows users to choose any video and then see its ranking for each region, would have a lot more draw for professionals. But he does believe Trends Map can have an impact.
“If it becomes popular enough, it could drive user behavior,” Damon said. “If you saw that the local number one video has changed, wouldn't you go check out the new one? That would mean that once a video makes the number one spot, it would get a whole new boost of traffic.”
“That would increase the value of being number one,” Damon said. “But only if people follow the map that much.”
