Washington, D.C (PRWEB) May 21, 2013

The National Resident Matching Program NRMP® (NRMP®) is pleased to announce four transitions for its Board of Directors. Hal B. Jenson, M.D., M.B.A, Founding Dean of the Western Michigan University School of Medicine, has been named President. Maria C. Savoia, M.D., Dean of Medical Education at the University of California San Diego, is the President-Designate, and Glenn A. Fosdick, F.A.C.H.E, President/Chief Executive Officer of the Nebraska Medical Center, is the Secretary-Treasurer. Kenneth B. Simons, M.D., Professor of Ophthalmology and Pathology and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Accreditation at the Medical College of Wisconsin, has been elected as a new Board member.

Thomas V. Whalen, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at Lehigh Valley Hospital and the outgoing NRMP President, said of the transition, “Dr. Jenson brings a wealth of experience to his NRMP leadership role. His background as a medical school dean, ACGME designated institutional official, and medical school department chair give him a broad perspective of the medical education continuum. He has been a valuable member of our Board for several years, and has demonstrated his strength in building partnerships and working with NRMP's mission in mind. He will lead and expand NRMP's Matching Program with his results-oriented spirit, and under his capable leadership our commitment to meeting the organization's goals will remain strong.”

Jenson was named Founding Dean of the Western Michigan University School of Medicine in January 2011. He is a pediatrician, specializing in clinical infectious disease and virology, and is a professor of pediatric and adolescent medicine at the university. He has served on the NRMP Board of Directors since 2006. “The Match represents one of the most important transitions in a physician's life. As an independent organization, the NRMP is positioned to best meet the needs of Match applicants, residency programs, medical schools, and teaching hospitals. The NRMP has a unique role in medical education and recognizes the special trust we hold, which is embodied in hundreds of thousands of applicant matches over more than 61 years,” said Dr. Jenson.

The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) is a private, non-profit organization established in 1952 at the request of medical students to provide an orderly and fair mechanism for matching the preferences of applicants for U.S. residency positions with the preferences of residency program directors. A computerized mathematical algorithm aligns the preferences of medical students and other applicants with the preferences of residency program directors in order to fill graduate medical education training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals. Research on the NRMP algorithm was a basis for Dr. Alvin Roth's 2012 Nobel Prize in Economics. In addition to the annual Main Residency Match, the NRMP conducts matches for more than 40 subspecialties.
