Leading online comparison site, Cost.co.uk, has responded to new research which highlights how much a driving conviction can affect insurance.

(PRWEB UK) 28 February 2013

People with driving convictions can expect to pay as much as double on their car insurance premiums, new research suggests.

The research by confused.com reveals that speeding offences can increase premiums by more than a third while uninsured drivers can expect to pay 131% more than they would have had to in first place if they had been insured.

Based on five million insurance quotes between October and December last year, one in five had a driving conviction to their name.

Being caught using a handheld device whilst driving raised premiums by 49%, running a red light 24% and defective tyres by 69%.

A spokesperson from Cost.co.uk said:

“A driving conviction is very likely to affect the cost of your car insurance, as insurance is all about risk. Insurers set the price of your premiums according to the likelihood of having to pay out for a claim. If you have a history of driving offences, insurers are going to see you as a higher risk.

“Some insurance companies offer specialist convicted driver insurance and by shopping around and comparing prices you can ensure you get the best deal. You could also agree to have a blackbox installed in your car to monitor your driving habits and prove you're a safe driver.”

Based in Essex, Cost.co.uk is one of the UK's leading price comparison sites. Allowing their online customers to seek out great deals and offers for car insurance, gadget insurance, credit cards, holidays and more. Founded in 2012, the agency has a trusted reputation for sourcing the most ideal policies at affordable prices.
