New Hampshire Motorcycle Lawyer John Tenn Says New Study Highlights Likelihood of Severe Injuries in Motorcycle Crashes
A Brown University study reveals that older motorcycle riders are more susceptible to injury than younger riders, and highlights the risks that motorcyclists of all ages face.
Manchester, NH (PRWEB) February 25, 2013
A Brown University study recently published in the journal Injury Prevention, found that motorcyclists age 60 and over were 2 1/2 times more likely to end up in an emergency room with severe injuries than riders in their 20s and 30s.
“This study reinforces the fact that any motorcycle collision can result in serious, life-changing injury,” said NH Motorcycle Lawyer John Tenn.
The study reported that older and middle-aged bikers were more likely to suffer internal organ injuries, and most commonly, brain injuries. Younger riders were more likely to suffer non-serious injuries such as contusions, abrasions, strains or sprains.
The study examined injuries resulting from motorcycle crashes in the U.S. from 2001 to 2008 that were treated in hospital emergency rooms. It compared the types and severity of injuries suffered by motorcycle riders aged 20-39, 40-59 years and 60-older. The study states that the number of injuries increased in all groups from 2001 to 2008, with the greatest rate of increase occurring in the oldest age group. Older adults had a threefold increased rate of hospitalization compared with younger adults. The study also suggests two ways of addressing this injury trend among older riders: special courses or training for aging riders and the use of protective chest gear.

“Internal organ injuries, particularly brain injuries, can have a devastating effect not only on the injured victim, but on the loved- ones and family members who are often left to provide life-long care. In our experience, many motorcycle collisions are caused by the carelessness of drivers in other motor vehicles. When a negligent driver causes severe injury or death to a motorcyclist, our job is to protect the rights of those who are injured and to make sure they receive full compensation for their injuries, expenses and losses,” said Attorney Tenn.
