Students showcase new innovations that will benefit society at Ryerson University

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) February 21, 2013

Carson Dunlop Weldon is pleased to announce the sixth annual Engineering Idol competition on Saturday March 2, 2013 at Ryerson University. Designed specifically to challenge participating high schools, the mission was unveiled in January 2013 to students to create a piezo electric powered device that benefits society. The format of the competition mimics a real-life engineering project including: a sales pitch and presentation, scientific research, and building the actual device in less than five hours on competition day, in front of a panel of expert judges. Rewards and scholarships will be given out to the winning students.

Part of National Engineering Month, organized by Professional Engineers of Ontario, Etobicoke Chapter, this event has tripled in size since it launched in 2008. The event is expected to draw more than 300 people with the goal to promote and encourage interest from students in the profession of Engineering.

“What makes the Engineering Idol competition unique is that students actually get to experience what it is like to be an engineer,” commented organizer Richard Weldon, P.Eng., President of Carson Dunlop Weldon. “Students will learn that successful engineers are innovative, communicate well, remain professional while under pressure, are highly skilled, and prioritize well.”

This competition is an opportunity for teams to demonstrate their proposal and have fun! The event is free for the public. The public is welcome to watch the team presentations and testing of the innovations from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
