Company-Sponsored Wellness Program Sends Workers Walking During Business Hours

Costa Mesa, CA (PRWEB) February 18, 2013

The first phase of the Morgan Drexen (http://morgandrexen.com) Wellness Program is off and walking! On a glorious Southern California day, several dozen employees strapped on their athletic shoes and hit the sidewalks of Costa Mesa. The workday walks marked the start of a company-wide initiative aimed at encouraging employees from the executive level down to get active and get healthy. Workers met in teams of five to ten throughout the day to walk one of three pre-determined paths in the South Coast Metro area. The beginner path measures 1.25 miles, the intermediate path 2.15 miles, and the advanced path a brisk 3.05 miles.

“We couldn't have picked a better day for our first walk,” said Walter Ledda, CEO of Morgan Drexen. “I'm thrilled so many employees have signed up for the Wellness Program. They recognize that no one should take their health for granted. These walks are a good way for our workers to get their blood moving, to take a break from the office, and hopefully build some camaraderie.”

Workers who take part in the walks receive participation points which will be redeemable for an assortment of prizes including gift certificates. Each team has a designated captain who keeps tracks of points and leads the walks, which will take place up to three times a week. All three walking paths begin at Morgan Drexen headquarters located in the Pacific Arts Plaza and wind along local streets, passing by several landmarks including the Segerstrom Center for the Arts and the South Coast Plaza.

“When Morgan Drexen said they were going to start a Wellness Program and the Wellness Walks, I knew this was the start of my journey,” says Ginny Sanderson, a Bankruptcy Liaison at Morgan Drexen who is serving as a walking team captain. “Now that I'm back to walking, I can work my way up to jogging. My goal is to take part in a 10k race later this year.”

73 Morgan Drexen employees signed up for the voluntary Wellness Program, which was announced earlier this month. In addition to the walks, the program offers on-site “Lunch N' Learn” nutrition sessions, as well as discounts for athletic equipment, athletic clubs, personal trainers and health food retailers. Participants also have the option of having their body mass index (BMI) measured. Continued BMI testing will take place throughout the year to measure their progress. New programs and benefits will be added to the Wellness Program in the future.

“We hope to make the Wellness Program a permanent fixture around here,” says Ledda. “It's an important initiative that is just now beginning with these first few steps.”
