On February 8th 2013 software company Anahata Technologies joined the web petition asking Oracle to remove the Ask Toolbar from the Java installation.

Perth, Western Australia (PRWEB) February 13, 2013

On Friday 8th of February 2013, The Perth (Australia) based software company Anahata Technologies Pty Ltd filed the a petition at change(dot)org asking Oracle to stop bundling the Ask Toolbar or any other software with Java Installations and Java Upgrades. The web based petition held at change(dot)org has currently reached 10,475 signatures and aims for 250,000. The Australian based software company asks developers and users in the Java Community to sign the petition and bring to Oracle's awareness the adverse effects this practice has on the brand and reputation of the Java Platform and Ecosystem.

A company spokesman declared: “We develop Enterprise Java Applications with desktop based interfaces. It is a requirement of our solutions that the Java Runtime Environment is installed in the user's pc. Mainly due to security reasons, The Java Runtime Environment needs to be updated regularly. Oracle has been making an effort to mitigate recent security vulnerabilities found and we appreciate that. Nevertheless it comes across as less than professional asking our users to follow an upgrade process where the users are prompted with installing the Ask Toolbar on each and every JRE upgrade. We understand that maintaining Java up to date requires effort, nevertheless we need to make Oracle aware of the consequences of these kind of practices. We request Oracle to seek for alternative forms on income to profit from or cover the costs of maintaining Java ”

About the Ask Toolbar in the Java Runtime Environment

The current Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installation, contains a screen in the installation wizard where the user is prompted to install the Ask Toolbar and the answer is defaulted to ‘Yes' in the checkbox. If a user follows the intuitive process of clicking Next without paying enough attention to the installation steps, the toolbar will be installed on the user's browser.

The installation of the Ask Toolbar as part of the Java Runtime Environment installation or upgrade been recently criticised for following deceptive practices such as executing the installation in the background ten minutes after exiting the Java Runtime Environment installation wizard. With this deceptive practice, users who had omitted the Ask Toolbar installation checkbox and, installed it unintentionally and upon completion of the Java installation wizard open the ‘Add Or Remove Programs' are not able to see the Ask Toolbar in the installed programs list and are therefore unable to uninstall it. A closer look at the Microsoft Windows logs reveals that the Ask Toolbar installation finishes 10 minutes after the Java Installation completes.
