UNCF Brings Education and Civic Chicago Leaders Together to Help Chicago Students Go to and through College
Organization previews new “A Mind is a TerribleThing to Waste ”® PSA campaign featuring UNCF CPS scholarship recipients.
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) February 11, 2013
UNCF (United Negro College Fund) the nation's largest and most effective minority education organization, will bring Chicago education and civic leaders together on February 13 to discuss the state of education in Chicago and the country and to preview a new edition of UNCF's iconic “A mind is a terrible thing to waste”® public service announcement campaign. The discussion and preview will take place at the UNCF Leader's Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency.
The discussion will be moderated by UNCF president and CEO Dr. Michael L. Lomax, and includes Chicago Public School CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett, Chicago Urban League president Andrea Zopp, AT&T Illinois President Paul La Schiazza (AT&T is the national sponsor of UNCF's governor's, mayor's and leaders' luncheons), and Tim King, founder of Urban Prep Academies. The 300 educators and community leaders who are scheduled to attend the UNCF Leaders Lunch will also hear from Cook County Board of Commissioners president Toni Preckwinkle and Illinois Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon. Tyronne Stoudemire, principal and senior diversity consultant at Mercer will serve as master of ceremonies
“There's a crisis in African American education in this country and here in Chicago,” says Lomax. “African Americans graduate high school at significantly lower rates than their white counterparts and score lower on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test. UNCF is here to add our efforts to those of our panelists to give Chicago students the education they need and that we as a nation need them to have. And the new ‘A mind is a terrible thing to waste'® PSA campaign we will preview asks the nation for support for our students and tell the stories of students in Chicago and around the country to provide inspiration and role models for students and families.”
Now entering its fifth decade, the UNCF PSA campaign is credited with helping raise more than $3 billion and has become one of the most successful and best known campaigns in history. Since its debut, more than 350,000 students have earned degrees from UNCF member colleges and universities and with UNCF scholarships.
