Sarasota, FL (PRWEB) January 14, 2013

International disaster relief organization, ShelterBox, is assessing the need for emergency shelter and other aid in Dunalley, Tasmania, after bushfires have destroyed nearly 150 homes.

ShelterBox responds following disasters such as earthquake, flood, tsunami, hurricane, cyclone or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. Each box contains a disaster relief tent, stove, water filtration system, blankets and other items necessary to help families live independently and with dignity in the months following disaster.

Members of the highly trained ShelterBox Response Team immediately began assessing the need for aid after arriving in Dunalley, Tasmania's worst hit town, on Monday. Nearly 150 homes, as well as fields and livestock, in Dunalley have been destroyed in the fires that resulted from extreme heat and strong winds.

Local residents, including former Murrindindi Shire mayor, Lyn Gunter, were pleased to see ShelterBox's immediate response to the fires.

ShelterBox has worked closely with Gunter before, while responding to the 2009 Black Saturday fires in Victoria.

“The ShelterBox tents provided essential support for those in need during the crisis and they will once again be well-received by those that have lost everything to these recent blazes and need support to restart," Gunter said.

ShelterBox is also responding to the Syrian refugee crisis, Typhoon Bopha in the Philippines, and ongoing flooding in Nigeria.
