University of Connecticut education professor Dr. Rachelle Pérusse, along with CollegeOnTrack, will present a session on Equity-based Career and College Readiness School Counseling at the Hawaiian International Conference on Education in Honolulu, HI, next week.

Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) January 02, 2013

On January 8th at 3 PM, Dr. Rachelle Pérusse will host a session introducing school counselors to a new education planning approach that builds college and career readiness.

College and career readiness are global concerns, and school counselors want to close achievement and college opportunity gaps for their students. But their jobs are complicated by the growing diversity of their student bodies. Individual variations in learning styles, interests, and abilities are increasingly overlaid with differences in economic backgrounds, social customs, and native languages. These factors conspire to put poor and minority youth at a disadvantage, making education planning more important than ever for these young people.

School counselors must develop processes that work for all their students, especially those at a disadvantage. They need tools and approaches to help their students reach college and career readiness on a more equal footing.

The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) recently revised its National Model for School Counseling. In her upcoming presentation, Dr. Pérusse will review this model in terms of foundation, delivery, management, and accountability; and discuss how it can help counselors close achievement gaps for poor and minority youth. She'll talk about how the United States compares to other countries in this respect, and discuss interventions that help counselors create a college-going culture for all students.

CollegeOnTrack will then demonstrate the company's education planning platform that teachers, counselors, and administrators are using to improve education outcomes with:

  • Learning Plans that support project-based learning, collaboration, and rubric-defined grading
  • Flipped Classrooms, where video lessons enrich student experiences and improve efficiency
  • Digital Portfolios that showcase students' abilities in athletics, performing arts, and group activities
  • College Planning, with tools for college research, deadline management, and transcript handling
  • Community Building tools that help counselors, teachers, and parents collaborate to support students

Ivee Cruz, a college and career counselor at University Laboratory School in Honolulu, says of CollegeOnTrack, “It is great to see a resource with everything in one place, that is user friendly.”

CollegeOnTrack will be exhibiting at the Conference, which takes place January 6–9 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort. The company also offers webinars on the use of its college planning tools. Readers can request information or a presentation at http://sales.collegeontrack.com.
