The Counseling Center at Freehold Opens to Help People Succeed in Drug and Alcohol Treatment

Intensive Outpatient Center Serves Monmouth County.

For those seeking drug or alcohol treatment, there are many avenues to pursue for the first 30 or 60 days of crisis care. But what is the natural next step for people living in Monmouth County who need confidential, ongoing care for drug or alcohol dependence?

The answer is The Counseling Center at Freehold, which has opened its doors at 4345 U.S. Highway 9 North in Freehold Township. Trained counselors in addiction are helping local patients cope with their feelings and re-enter society through the lens of sobriety.

The Counseling Center at Freehold is all about one-on-one care, in a comfortable, discreet environment at the Pond Road Shopping Center at 4345 U.S. Highway 9 North. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) combines evidence-based, state-of-the-art treatment with 12-Step principles in cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT). The IOP is an intense, focused experience designed to enable sober and productive living.

Eligibility for the IOP is based on a clinical assessment. Care is recommended for individuals who have recently completed detox or for those who do not require immediate, intensive treatment.

Mike Karl, director of operations, said demographic studies show a distinct need for The Counseling Center at Freehold.

“There is a burgeoning pandemic of prescription medicine abuse in many parts of New Jersey, including Monmouth County,” he said. “We are at the grassroots level here, working to help solve the problem from within, and to serve as a resource for many who thought there was nowhere safe for them to go.”

“The key to our success is helping people who truly want to be helped,” Karl said. “The people we serve come here voluntarily, with open hearts and minds, who truly want to be here and truly want our help.”

As The Counseling Center at Freehold has just opened its doors, it is staffed by two doctors and three addiction counselors. As the number of patients grows, it is expected the center will have six counselors operating six days a week through the evening hours.

Aesthetics are a key component of 5,000-square-foot center. There is plenty of glass windows and bright, natural light. It is a place designed to make people feel at ease, rather than traditional drug and alcohol centers where patients are assigned to small, windowless rooms and are somehow expected to feel comfortable.

The Counseling Center at Freehold is the first of four planning to open in New Jersey. Others are expected to open next year in Parsippany, Cranford and Fair Lawn, based on similar demographic data that demonstrates clear need.
