What do you do when the world is still turning after December 21, 2012?

In recognition of the ancient Maya's belief that 2013 would usher in the dawn of a new era, the Lodge at Chaa Creek will be launching a series of new tours, packages and activities throughout 2013, according to activities coordinator Bryony Bradley.

“Although the ancient Maya never predicted that the world would end on December 21 2012, it was still a very important date, marking the end of one cosmic cycle and the beginning of another, and we want to acknowledge that with a series of new tours, packages and activities throughout 2013,” Ms Bradley said while announcing the “La Capitana” day tour.

The La Capitana excursion takes guests on a leisurely cruise around the remote Vaca Lake reservoir in the Upper Macal River Valley, offering a rare glimpse into the area's diverse eco system that is home to abundant Belizean wildlife such as tapirs, howler and spider monkeys, toucans, parrots and even the odd jaguar, Ms Bradley said.

“Over the years, Vaca Lake has swollen to some six miles across, and one of the locals who grew up there began taking people around it on pontoon as an easy, leisurely way to explore the Belizean wilderness up close and personal, relaxing in the shade with a camera and cold drink in hand.

“As it fits in with Chaa Creek's belief in casual luxury, we decided to incorporate it in with our regular nature tours. It's one more addition to our range of activities, which run from moderately strenuous to laid-back and allows guests to experience nature on their own terms.

The Lodge at Chaa Creek was one of the first resorts to offer inland adventure in Belize. Beginning in 1981 with simple thatch roof accommodation and local knowledge of Belize's exotic flora and fauna, the highly awarded eco resort has grown to offer affordable all-inclusive Belizean vacation packages with different emphasis such as family adventure, romantic getaways, Maya exploration and rainforest to reef deals, which take guests from the inland jungles to the Caribbean Belize Great Barrier Reef.

Situated within its own 365 acre private rainforest nature reserve with over 70 Maya archaeological sites and miles of secure jungle trails for nature hikes and horseback, mountain bike riding, Chaa Creek is home to a renowned Natural History Centre, working Butterfly Farm, professional Hilltop Spa, conference centre, a fine dining restaurant and Jungle Lounge, pool and other amenities.

Ms Bradley said the addition of the La Capitana tour is the first of several new initiatives for 2013.

“Having made it through 2012, with the US Presidential elections, the devastation of Hurricane Sandy on the US East coast and all the other dramas as well as the hectic pace of day-to-day life, we think people are looking to get back to nature, reconnect with each other and recharge their batteries while enjoying a bit of casual luxury and some pampering. 2013 will be all about refreshment and revitalisation in a new era, so we'll be offering some great new packages and new deals throughout the year. I think it's going to be a great 2013 in Belize,” Ms Bradley said.
