Classroom Learning Centers on Real-life Lessons

Hershey, PA (PRWEB) December 03, 2012

Brian Scudamore, founder and CEO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK? knows how important it is to share his successes, so he recently got up at 4:30 am to Skype with students in Milton Hershey School's new entrepreneurial business class.

Sharing his stories of struggling in school and dealing with distraction and self-doubt, Scudamore made an instant connection with the students. “Many of our kids come from depressed communities, where there are very few examples of successful entrepreneurs,” explains business teacher Matt Bergman. “It was important to give students a chance to connect with someone who has been in their shoes, who understood the struggles of school and overcame the challenges of starting a business.” The class is based on the book “Who Owns the Ice House” by Clifton L. Taulbert and Gary Schoeniger. The Ice House Entrepreneurship program is designed to get students to learn from real world experts.

Deleila Alloui, a senior from Reading, PA who plans to pursue a career in business, was inspired by Scudamore's story. “I understand you can study entrepreneurship in college, but instead of waiting until college and getting a professor's perspective, we are actually hearing from a person who has experienced troubles that we have experienced. He got to where he wanted to be, and we can do the same thing if we try.”

“Letting students see that you can have surmountable challenges in your life is critical because frequently people can get so caught up in their challenges that they just lose hope,” says Robert Kemmery, Director of the Career Technical Education Program at Milton Hershey School. “This is a way for them to learn from other people's experiences and get the confidence to grow into their own person and be successful.”
