Deseret News Ranks as Third Fastest Growing Newspaper in U.S. and Largest in Utah with 88 Percent Sunday Circulation Growth
Growth Attributed to National Expansion, Steady Traction in Local Market and Digital Focus
Salt Lake City, Utah (PRWEB) November 19, 2012
The Deseret News, Utah's longest continually published daily newspaper, today announced that its Sunday circulation grew 88 percent since last year, making it the largest in Utah and one of the fastest-growing in the U.S., according to a recent report from the Audit Bureau of Circulation.
The paper's Sunday circulation rose to 176,096, while the weekday circulation rose 32 percent year over year to 91,639. The Sunday increase makes Deseret News the third fastest growing paper in the U.S. with a circulation of more than 100,000. As part of the paper's continued national expansion, the Deseret News sells its Sunday Edition in all 50 of the United States, along with the Church News, the official newspaper of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
“Deseret News Sunday overall growth was driven by rapid growth in its national print reach along with its digital application usage,” said the Newspaper Agency Corporation in a statement.
In the Salt Lake area, combined weekly print and monthly web readership for the Deseret News grew by 15 percent year-over-year.
“We are pleased to achieve growth across all the metrics that matter, including in print and online both locally and nationally, especially at a time of declining circulation at many papers,” said Christopher Lee, publisher of the Deseret News and vice president of Deseret Digital Media. "The real thanks goes to our loyal print subscribers in Utah and around the country, and to the growing digital audience on our apps and website."
This significant growth comes just two years after parent company Deseret Media Companies unveiled an innovative new editorial direction for the newspaper, aimed at salvaging the legacy product in a struggling media landscape and forging a sustainable business model for the 21st century. At the heart of Deseret Media Companies' strategy is a specialized focus of resources on areas of editorial emphasis underserved by most other news media: Family, Financial Responsibility, Excellence in Education, Care for the Needy, Values in the Media and Faith in the Community.
Additionally, a new leadership team under the direction of Harvard Business School professor and media innovator, CEO and President Clark Gilbert, has focused on transforming the 150-year-old legacy newspaper business and introducing new digital products. One example is Ok.com, a crowd-sourced social media movie review site launched this fall, which democratizes movie ratings and offers a parent-driven alternative to the MPAA. Repositioning the core business while simultaneously launching a new disruptive business around digital growth has increased print circulation for the Deseret News, expanded Web site traffic, and raised digital revenue in both old and new channels.
