The drought that hit the mid-west over the summer left many farmers in trouble. Colle released a statement informing people how they can help farmers recover from this disaster.

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) November 19, 2012

On November 19, Colle, an organic farmers market community, reacted to a CNN article about how farmers are recovering from the drought that hit over the summer.

According to the http:// CNN, “the U.S. Department of Agriculture designated 1,692 counties as disaster areas due to the drought. The department notes about 80% of agricultural land in the country is affected, making this year's drought more far-reaching than any since the 1950s.”

According to the article, on top of the dry rivers and dead animals that are turning up as a result of the drought, farmers markets throughout the mid-west have run out of produce early in the season, forcing them to shut down early. “In a normal year, the markets should be stocked with produce through October. But 2011 and 2012 have been anything but normal for many Oklahoma farmers,” reports CNN.

Colle releases a statement encouraging people to support the farmer's markets that are still lucky enough to be running this late in the season. “Although there is no way for us to increase the rainfall for next summer, we can support farmers by purchasing the produce grown by local farmers and helping the farmer's market community.”

Colle went on to state that there is also a drought relief program being run by the USDA. Visit the USDA website for more information on how you can help farmers recover from the drought.

Colle is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about sustainable consumption and responsible conservation. The Colle movement is dedicated to connecting natural product vendors, organic farmers and all consumers who live an organic and natural lifestyle with the ultimate goal of creating more sustainable farming and consumerism.
