Tablets Dominate Holiday Shoppers' Plans, According To A Techbargains.com Consumer Survey

More people plan to buy a tablet this year, but Google's Nexus 7 dominates iPad Mini, Kindle Fire HD and Microsoft Surface.

TechBargains.com, the deal aggregation website for electronic products, has released the results of its annual holiday shopping survey, finding more people plan to buy tablets this season.

According to the survey, which canvassed the views of more than 1,200 visitors to Techbargains.com, over half (53%) of respondents plan to purchase a tablet, a significant increase from 40% last year. Of those, one in three shoppers (33%) are looking to buy a Google Nexus 7, 30% an iPad, 24% an iPad Mini and 24% a Kindle Fire HD. The Microsoft Surface tablet, Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet were least desired according to the survey.

“With more tablets on the market to fit every size budget, our survey reveals consumers are even more interested this year versus last year in giving and receiving a tablet - the must have tech gadget this holiday season,” said Yung Trang, president and editor-in-chief of TechBargains.com.

Of those who are set to purchase a tablet, nearly half (46%) plan to buy it as a gift for someone else, while more than one in three (34%) plan to buy one for themselves and one in five (20%) plan to do both. Good value, favorable product reviews and brand reputation were cited as the most important factors when deciding which tablet to buy.

Other consumer electronics are on holiday shoppers' wish lists this year. The survey found that 53% of people plan to spend half or more of their holiday shopping budget on consumer electronics. More than half (53%) plan to spend $250 to $500 on tech products, 18% plan to spend $100 or less. Nearly one in four respondents (24%) say they are likely to buy a smartphone, followed by one in five (20%) likely to buy a television, 19% a laptop, 18% a gaming console, and 10% an e-reader.

The survey also examined when consumers' plan to start their holiday shopping, discovering one in three (34%) plan to start their holiday shopping in November and one in five (20%) will start on ‘Black Friday', the first shopping day after Thanksgiving, which falls on November 23 this year. The majority (79%) of respondents may finish their holiday shopping in December while 34% end the days before Christmas. Nearly half (48%) plan to spend the same amount of money, 28% indicate that they may spend less and 24% plan to spend more on holiday shopping this season than last season. Of those who plan to spend more, 27% indicate they have more people to buy for and 22% have more disposable income. Of those who will spend less, the majority (61%) say they have less money to spend on gifts. Nearly all respondents (98%) say they plan to shop online with two out of three (66%) planning to purchase most or all of their holiday gifts online.
