National Council of La Raza Pairs with Reef Light Interactive to Spread the Word about Latino Youth Issues

NCLR and DC Web Design Agency launch user-friendly tool for data dissemination.

This fall, the National Council of La Raza, NCLR, has launched a two part data project aimed at shedding more light on Latino youth issues than ever before. Together with DC web design agency Reef Light Interactive, NCLR has visualized and simplified the data book “America's Future: Latino Child Well-Being in Numbers and Trends,” a work produced by NCLR and the Population Reference Bureau (PRB) in April 2010.

The comprehensive tome provides an overview of current trends for Latino children since 2000 and integrates key factors such as demography, citizenship, family structure, poverty, health, education and juvenile justice.

Launched on October 25, 2012, NCLR's new user friendly data tool allows for the book's complex data sets concerning Latino children to be quickly and easily searched, filtered and disseminated to relevant policy makers, researchers, the media, affiliates and the private sector. The organization hopes the new tool will help impart the evolving importance of Latino youth in American society on a broad scale.

In part one of the project, NCLR and Reef Light Interactive compiled the raw data sets from the book and created a tool for users to filter and download the data. Part two of the project included adding a visually appealing representation of the data in the form of a unique infographic. Reef Light worked closely with NCLR to create a user-friendly and trustworthy visualization of the data. This reflected the core of NCLR's mission:

  •     Support our advocacy and policy work through the use of solid, accurate data and careful analysis.
  •     Represent the diversity of Latino voices and experiences in the country.
  •     Effectively communicate new knowledge regarding our community to a growing body of audiences and partners.

The infographic's design assets were divided into three categories, the first of which was historical data. Here, NCLR paid particular attention to both citizenship and growth rates of Latino children relative to white children. The second category was the “how,” focusing on how poverty among Latino children impacts challenges in finding affordable housing, obesity rates and issues in high-density neighborhoods. The third element of the infographic is projection of demographic growth, tying in poverty rates as applicable.
