The University of Virginia held its second "Munching for Memory" hot dog eating contest this year. Thrown by Hoos For Memory, a group supporting the fight against Alzheimer's, the event was held last April 20th in the University of Virginia's amphitheatre. The event was huge success with a great turnout. It raised a significant amount of funds, too.

“Alzheimer's is such an important issue and often goes unnoticed,” states Marc Slater of Ultimate Memory Software. “We are excited to see so many people taking part and helping to raise funds for such a worthy cause.” By competing in the Munching for Memory contest, participants had the opportunity to be named the “Big Dawgz Golden Wiener.” Registration was a mere $10 per ticket, encouraging more support and involvement.

Started by a student of the University of Virginia, Hoos For Memory supports raising funds for Alzheimer's. The group is involved with local nursing homes and helps to serve the community with other volunteer opportunities and fundraising efforts. All funds raised by the group go to Alzheimer's research.

“It is important that such groups as Hoos For Memory exist and continue to support and raise funds for Alzheimer's research,” adds Mr. Slater. “It's evident that Alzheimer and dementia continue to be on the rise and greatly impacting families around the world. We must start focusing on prevention.”

According to the the Alzheimer's Association's official website. 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's which means that one out of eight people over the age of 65 are directly affected. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Alzheimer's and dementia not only affect the individuals, but their families, all of their caregivers, and the overall health system. With such a major impact on society, continued support for research is crucial.
