Explore Tibet, a Lhasa-based tour company, has announced a “no plastic bottle” project, as part of its commitment to sustainable tourism.

Citing the impact of plastic bottles on the environment, Explore Tibet have committed to providing a tank of purified water and hand-pump to all Tibet tour groups. While continuing to allow visitors use bottled water, the tour company has suggested its clients use the tank water.

“By using one tank of water, we save more than 34 plastic bottles, because each tank holds 18.9L and plastic bottles hold 550ml,” Explore Tibet have said.

Only certain types of plastic bottles can be recycled by municipalities in Tibet. Thus, many plastic bottles end up lying on the ground and in waterways as litter. These bottles take more than a human lifetime to decompose, highly impacting the environment via water and land resources.

Explore Tibet have said, “Tibet is a unique and special travel destination, one that can only be seen by kind eyes and gentle hearts. Ancient cultures and traditions, fragile mountain environments, rare and endangered flora and fauna are worth protecting and preserving for future generations.

“As a traveler to Tibet, you can make a difference and ensure that your journey has a positive impact on the places you travel to and the people you meet.”

There are still several restrictions for Tibet travel. Citizens of the UK, Norway, Korea, Austria, the Phillipines and Vietnam cannot get permits at this time. And currently no foreign groups are permitted to visit the Mt. Everest base camp. Groups are allowed to drive to the border town of Zhangmu and view Everest and the Himalayan range from the village of Old Tingri.

Explore Tibet is a locally-owned Tibet travel agency committed to responsible tourism, Tibetan travel permit and sustainable practice.
