Head-up display (HUD) superimposes images onto the inner side of the windshield to enable drivers view the information while keeping their eyes on the road. HUD was introduced in military aircrafts industry in early 1940, but its usage was commercialized in 1060s; then it was widely accepted in civil aircrafts as well. It is been used in almost all the aircrafts worldwide. Initially used in military aircraft to display avionics and instrument readings as well as gunsights in front of the pilot, head-up displays migrated to commercial aircraft and later to automobiles. Passenger car systems display vehicle speed and objects detected in a collision avoidance system, such as a deer crossing the road up ahead. Head-up display (HUD) is a system used basically in aircrafts and recently in cars. Head-up displays (HUDs) are also used in goggles and helmets (see head mounted display).

Aviation industry in defense (military) and commercial airline is the largest application of HUD; followed by automotive market. Unlike aircrafts, HUDs are used as a secondary information display in cars. HUDs are available in the market in wide range; like from a singe color to four color display where GPS information can be displayed. Aviation industry is a saturated market for HUD and hence estimated to have a very slow growth. Many car OEMs are about to launched their HUD featured models and many are about to follow the trend. On the other hand, aviation is a saturated market, which is just maintaining its current growth. In 2015, mid segment cars will have be HUD enabled and then HUD market auto industry will have exponential growth. On aircraft avionics systems, HUDs typically operate from dual independent redundant computer systems. They receive input directly from the sensors (pitot-static, gyroscopic, navigation, etc.) aboard the aircraft and perform their own computations rather than receiving previously computed data from the flight computers. On other aircraft (the Boeing 787, for example) the HUD guidance computation for Low Visibility Take-off (LVTO) and low visibility approach comes from the same flight guidance computer that drives the autopilot. Computers are integrated with the aircraft's systems and allow connectivity onto several different data buses such as the ARINC 429, ARINC 629, and MIL-STD-1553.

Typical aircraft HUDs display airspeed, altitude, a horizon line, heading, turn/bank and slip/skid indicators. These instruments are the minimum required by 14 CFR Part 91.
