On November 1, Linus Bike, a commuter bikes manufacturer, responds to an article published by Wicked Local which reports that after evaluating a repaving project in Arlington, MA the Arlington Town engineering department, the local Transportation Advisory Committee and Bicycle Advisory Committee are negotiating the establishment of bike lanes in accordance with the repaving. Linus Bike responds with overwhelming support of the impending project.
According to Wicked Local, sister site to Arlington Advocate, there is no policy that governs road marking after the roads are repaved. The article states that the committees discussing the repaving project “are determining which roads in town are suitable for bike lanes so they might be marked accordingly following repaving projects.”
Wicked Local reported that Public Works Director Michael Rademacher had commented on the project stating, “We'd like to be a little more proactive in identifying streets that could be advantageous or desirable for bike lanes. As we do projects in those areas, we would consider that.”
“From our point of view, we consider this an 85 percent to 90 percent victory,” stated Phil Goff of the East Arlington Livable Streets Coalition to Wicked Local. “This was an opportunistic advocacy victory. To provide bike facilities on that street required no changes at all to the design — no curbs, no parking; all it meant was striping. It was easy to provide.”
Linus Bike representative China Reevers commented on Arlington's repaving project with supportive enthusiasm. “The establishment of bike lanes during the Arlington repaving project is tremendously proactive. These new bike lanes are just the beginning of an environmentally safe and health conscious Arlington that will emerge from this project,” states Reevers.
Goff adds in his interview with Wicked Local, “I think there's real value to going a little bit of an extra mile and putting in stencils and signs. It's a way to promote a comfortable space for bike riders and to educate motorists to expect bikes.”
“As a commuter bikes manufacturer, Linus Bike is aware of the dangers that come with the lack of bike lanes,” comments Reevers. "The Arlington biking community is sure to grow with the additional comfort and safety measures being taken by the city."
