Alisanos LLC To License Large Medical Device Patent Portfolio Developed By Medcanica
Medcanica, Inc., an American start-up company, invested millions of dollars to research and develop next-generation surgical tools.
Chevy Chase, MD (PRWEB) November 01, 2012
The Medici Portfolio, LLC today announced that Alisanos LLC, a Medici-managed company, seeks to license the extensive patent portfolio developed by Medcanica. The patent portfolio includes sixteen U.S. patents, five foreign patents, and ongoing prosecution.
J. William “Bill” Box founded Medcanica in 1998 to research and develop advanced medical devices, and more specifically to focus on safer, less invasive surgical tools for some of the most serious of surgical procedures. Before forming Medcanica, Mr. Box cofounded Symbiosis Corporation, which was later sold for $175 million USD.
At Medcanica, Mr. Box assembled a highly talented team of surgeons and biomedical engineers to drive the R&D efforts. Over a number of years and with millions of dollars invested, the company successfully invented improved surgical tools that can be used in a wide-range of surgeries, including cardiac, endoscopic, and laparoscopic procedures. Of particular distinction, the company achieved major advancements in devices used for “beating heart” surgery. The patent portfolio developed by Medcanica protects these inventions.
Alisanos entered into an agreement with Medcanica to license its patent portfolio. Under the parties' agreement, Medcanica transferred ownership of its patent portfolio to Alisanos in exchange for a share of licensing profits.
“Medcanica fully supports Alisanos' licensing efforts,” stated Mr. Box. “Medcanica has made important advancements to the surgical art. And we look forward to others utilizing this patented technology in an authorized manner.”
