Harper Government Helps to Strengthen the Economy of B.C.'s Coastal Communities

PORT ALBERNI, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Nov. 13, 2012) - Today, Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo - Alberni, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification (WD), announced federal funding that that will help to create jobs, growth, and long-term prosperity in B.C.'s coastal communities.

"Today, the Harper Government is supporting B.C.'s coastal communities to create new economic opportunities," said MP Lunney. "These projects will build upon each community's unique strengths, while also helping pave the way for job creations, economic growth and long-term prosperity."

The projects announced today range in scope, from the construction of a new marina in Port Alice to the completion of tourism infrastructure on Keith Island. The combined investment is more than $483,000 in West Coast Community Adjustment Program (WestCCAP).Funding will enable these three communities to upgrade their existing tourism infrastructure, support economic and diversified growth, and promote job creation.

"The WestCCAP project on Tseshaht Traditional Territory in the Broken Group Islands will give access to ancestral homelands to our members," said Cindy Stern, CEO of the Tseshaht First Nation, one of the organizations receiving funding. "This is a very important step for Tseshaht's "going home" strategy. The project will allow the community to decide how they want to see the territory developed for the benefit of Tseshaht in a way consistent with their values and culture. "

The West Coast Community Adjustment Program is providing more than
$7 million to support economic growth, job creation and the future sustainability of B.C. coastal communities affected by challenges within the salmon fishery.

The Fisheries Legacy Trust, comprised of the 13 west coast Community Futures, is delivering this initiative on behalf of WD. The Government of Canada supports initiatives that combat challenges facing traditional industries, protect resources in affected areas in order to support the long-term success of resource-dependent communities.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.

Backgrounder

On November 13, 2012, the Government of Canada announced funding of more than $483,000 towards three projects located on Vancouver Island.

Tseshaht First Nation - Port Alberni, B.C.

WD funding of $223,200 will help the Tseshaht First Nation establish tourism infrastructure on Keith Island, part of the Broken Island Group. A floating dock, ramp and gazebo will be constructed, targeting the increasing number of kayakers in the area.

Village of Port Alice - Port Alice, B.C.

WD funding of $200,000 for the Village of Port Alice will support the construction of a marina (wooden pier and float) at the Rumble Beach boat launch. The project will strengthen local economic opportunities by providing more space for seaplanes, commercial and recreational vessels.

Cowichan Valley Regional District - Cowichan Bay, B.C.

WD funding of $60,000 for the Cowichan Valley Regional District will help complete the Cowichan Bay Marine Gateway project. The investment will construct a kayak/canoe launch and landing float with waterfront amenities such as an access ramp, parking, day-use shelter, small playground and signage.
