New Men's Underwear Alert- the only shade of grey should be real grey. Men are being warned to improve their washing skills by boxer briefs experts

Men's white underwear should stay white or go straight in the bin. If gents always end up with an array of grey briefs, then they should buy grey. So say underwear aficionados who this week warn men that poor washing habits can leave them with dull boxer shorts, instead of the whiter than white perfection that came out of the box. DGU has issued the alert after reviewing customer feedback.

Men should wash their underwear with care - or risk wearing dull grey briefs and boxers rather than the smart tighty-whities they bought originally. Men's underwear experts have some sound advice.

The worst washing sin for lovers of white briefs and boxer shorts is mixing whites with colours, especially anything black, warns Deadgoodundies' partner Adam Davies.

Men are also urged to follow washing instructions on the care label inside their undies, take care to choose the right washing powder or liquid and, if possible, dry cotton tighty-whities outdoors in the sunshine.

Some cotton underwear, for example pure cotton styles by Sloggi for Men, can be washed at much higher temperatures than the standard 40-degee wash, even 90 degrees. But manmade fabrics need greater care, Adam explains.

“You can help keep finer yarns like microfibre in good condition by washing them at the right temperature and perhaps putting your pants in a net wash bag to avoid any snagging,” he says.

Men's underwear, from thongs to loose boxer shorts, is always best dried away from direct heat such as a radiator. Adam also advises using plastic pegs designed not to leave a mark on clothes when they are hung on a line. “Wooden pegs can catch finer fabrics or leave very clear indentations,” he says.

Adam also touches on the unfortunate habit of wearing underwear more than once. His verdict is simple: “Don't! This is totally unhygienic. If you can only afford a small collection of underwear, or you're travelling and have limited access to washing facilities, look for fast dry materials. Wear and wash daily to stay fresh.”

He concludes: “If your washing machine turns whites grey, then best buy smart marl grey in the first place. Grubby looking white underwear is a huge turnoff!”
