DocbookMD Founders Selected for Travis County Physician Humanitarian Award
DocbookMD co-founders, Drs. Gueramy and Haas, were selected by their peers for a physician humanitarian award related to their medical volunteer work in Libya, Haiti and India.
Austin, TX (PRWEB) October 31, 2012
Travis County Medical Society's 2012 Physician Humanitarian Award is being presented to Tracey Haas, DO, MPH and Timothy Gueramy, MD in recognition of their work in providing medical care to orphans in India and to disaster victims around the world from Haiti to Libya, most recently in Misrata, site of one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the 2011 Libyan revolution. The doctors' relief efforts don't end with their return home from the many trips they make to disaster areas; they make sure there is effective local follow-up care before they leave, and back home in Austin, TX, the couple stays in touch with those providers to ensure long-distance consultation is just a phone call or message away.
Dr. Gueramy, an orthopedic surgeon specialized in foot and ankle surgery, had plenty to do in Haiti and Libya, from complicated reconstructions to therapeutic amputations. In each location, he was able to work with local surgeons and residents to teach updated techniques, leaving them vital new skills each time. While Dr. Gueramy has focused on treating post-trauma wounds of disaster victims and teaching, Dr. Haas's passion has been for the more than 500 Indian orphans supported by The Miracle Foundation, each of whom she personally examines on her annual trips to India and whose routine and emergent care she consults on and reviews on a weekly basis as volunteer medical director of the Austin-based foundation for the past six years. She also holds degrees in tropical medicine and global public health, which helps her contend with the variety of challenges these underserved areas face, especially in the post-disaster environment. Women's health issues in each of these locations has become a major focus for change that Dr. Haas continues to be a champion for, both at home and abroad.
Drs. Gueramy and Haas have not only volunteered their time and medical expertise, but have organized the building of a prosthetics clinic, a hospital, and community health centers, encouraging and helping local residents to become community health leaders. When they are not on mission trips and volunteering, Drs Gueramy and Haas are focused on transforming medical communications as co-founders of DocbookMD, a secure messaging application.
