Eva's Village did not shut its doors as Hurricane Sandy made its way towards New Jersey. An emergency plan was put into place to make sure that the clients who depend on Eva's Village did not go hungry. “Our kitchen was open as usual on Monday and served the noon meal,” stated Marie Reger, executive director of Eva's Village. “Each client was also provided with a bag lunch in case the weather conditions prevented us from being open on Tuesday.”
Eva's Village (http://www.evasvillage.org) is a non-profit comprehensive social service organization with a mission to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, treat the addicted and provide medical care to the poor with respect for the human dignity of each individual. The kitchen serves a hot nutritious meal every day at noon 365 days/year. “Many people depend on us for a hot meal each day and we made sure that it was available for all of those who came during the hurricane,” stated Marie Reger. “We also have over 250 men, women and children who live in our sheltering and addiction treatment programs that depend on us for their meals each day.”
Eva's Village, originally a New Jersey soup kitchen, was founded in 1982 by Msgr. Vincent E. Puma in response to the increasing incidence of homelessness in his Paterson, NJ parish. But Msgr. Puma soon realized that a soup kitchen was not enough. With the generous support of thousands of donors and private and government grants, Eva's has grown into the most respected anti-poverty program in New Jersey.
