IBHS guidance is available to help home and business owners repair, rebuild and recover from the storm

Tampa, Fla. (PRWEB) October 30, 2012

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) urges victims of Hurricane Sandy to take advantage of the many free information resources available to them as they begin the recovery and repair/rebuilding process. These materials cover both immediate concerns, such as generator safety and flood damage recovery, as well as longer-term considerations, such as how to hire a contractor, and avoid scammers.

Unfortunately, Hurricane Sandy has damaged thousands of properties with severe flooding and wind speeds reaching Category 1 hurricane strength, left millions of people without power, and caused massive flooding along the U.S. East Coast.

“While our hearts go out to the families who lost loved ones during this catastrophe, we want to be sure that no further injuries or deaths are caused by people who are using generators or space heaters incorrectly, or trying to do their own repairs,” said Julie Rochman, IBHS president and CEO. “In addition, as home and business owners begin the recovery process, they will need good, objective information to ensure that they can get fully back on their feet and move forward.”

IBHS' free Sandy Preparedness and Recovery Resources, including guidance on repairing, rebuilding and recovering safely following the storm include:

  •     You Can Go Home Again
  •     Getting Back to Business
  •     Avoid Falling Victim To A Contractor Scam
  •     Making Repairs If Your Property Is Damaged
  •     Choosing a Reputable Contractor
  •     Recover – After A Flood
  •     Using Generators Safely
  •     Safe Use of Alternative Heating Sources
