A study funded by the National Institute of Health found that those who used the Weight Watchers Pro Points diet system lost more weight on average than those who went through other clinical weight loss programs. The study followed 141 obese or overweight men and women, and randomly divided these individuals into three groups; one that used a health professional led weight loss program based on behavioral treatment; a peer led Weight Watchers program; and a program that started with the behavioral weight loss program then switched to Weight Watchers system after twelve weeks.
After 48 weeks, about 37% of those using the Weight Watchers Pro Points system, along with the weekly meetings, lost ten percent of their body weight. Those in the other two programs fared slightly poorer, with about 11% of the clinical weight loss program and 15% of the hybrid program seeing the same kind of results.
This discrepancy seems to come from the fact that many in the professionally led weight loss program and the hybrid program dropped out of the study before it was completed. For those who did continue till the end of the program, the average weight loss was 13 pounds for the Weight Watchers only group, 12 pounds for the behavioral treatment only and about 8 pounds for the combined program.
The advantages that the Weight Watchers Pro Points System seems to have over the other programs are consistency and encouragement from peers. Those who remained in the behavioral treatment program lost statistically about the same amount of weight, but those who attended the Weight Watchers meetings were more motivated to continue the program to completion and this may be the key to long term weight loss for those who are suffering from the ill affects of obesity or being overweight.
