With winter just around the corner, VetDepot is reminding pet parents to keep a lookout for symptoms of cold weather joint pain.

With cold winter weather just around the corner, VetDepot is reminding pet owners to be extra vigilant about looking out for symptoms of joint pain in dogs and cats. Arthritis is one of the most common sources of chronic pain in pets, and cold damp weather can exacerbate the problem.

According to VetDepot's Pet Arthritis infographic, one in five dogs over the age of seven and 90% of geriatric cats suffer from some degree of arthritis. Working dogs, highly athletic dogs and obese pets are at an elevated risk for acquiring the disease. Arthritis commonly affects certain areas of the body more than others including the shoulders, elbows, knees, paws, hips, neck and back.

Common symptoms of arthritis in pets include pain, limping, difficulty rising, difficulty walking up stairs, loss of interest in playing or walking and a reluctance to be picked up or touched. Owners with animals that do exhibit signs of increased joint pain during the winter months can help by following these tips:

•Shorten the time spent exercising. Too much activity can be tough for an animal experiencing severe arthritis pain, so keep walks as short as necessary to ease discomfort.

•Modify their environment to make it easier to get around the house. Food and water should be kept at a comfortable height on a non-slip surface. Pets in multi-story homes should have access to water on every floor. There are also ramps available to make it easier for pets to navigate stairs and get onto furniture.

•Make sure pets have a thick, comfortable bed indoors to sleep on during cold nights. A thick cushion is easier on the joints than a thin surface.

•Talk to a veterinarian about a pet arthritis supplement, like GlycoFlex or Cosequin, to help rebuild cartilage and support mobility.

Owners should speak with their pet's veterinarian about an arthritis treatment plan for their individual pet.
