As half term approaches many families will be making plans to travel overseas for a holiday and as such need to ensure that their vehicle is fit for purpose. This includes checking that everything is mechanically sound, that their car insurance covers them for driving abroad and that they are familiar with the laws which govern the roads in the countries that they intend to visit.
When planning a trip abroad, there are a number of things a driver can overlook and plenty of things that can go wrong. Keeping this in mind, Tiger.co.uk has put together a few tips to for those taking their cars abroad:
- Always make sure you check with your insurer that your policy covers you for driving abroad and that you have the required paperwork.
Andrew Goulborn, Commercial Director for Tiger.co.uk commented: “If you are planning to take your car abroad during half term there are a series of steps you can take to make sure your trip is enjoyable. Importantly, always make sure that you have adequate car insurance cover before taking your car abroad. Make sure you know what level of cover you will have in the countries you are visiting and check that you will be covered for the duration of your stay. It is worth being aware that for some UK insurance policies, neglecting to inform the insurer that you will be driving abroad could completely invalidate your insurance cover. If you do not already have cover for driving abroad you will usually be able to pay a small fee to ensure you are covered.
