This October, Hendy Mazda in Eastleigh is throwing its weight behind Tyre Safety Month, the annual national campaign that aims to highlight the need for regular tyre checks in order to cut the number of deaths and injuries on the nation's roads caused by unsafe and illegal tyres.

“We are fully committed to road safety and we hope that by taking part in this important initiative we can help prevent accidents and save lives,” explained Ian Davie, Service Director at Hendy Mazda.

“Sufficient tread depth is crucial to remove water from the road surface and keep the tyre in contact with the road. If the tread grooves are not deep enough water cannot be moved, resulting in a loss of steering grip and traction. This can lead to longer stopping distances, impaired handling and an increased likelihood of aquaplaning. Hendy Mazda wants to help ensure that our local roads are safer places for motorists and pedestrians alike.”

To support the campaign Hendy Mazda is offering a free tyre safety check to all customers who visit the Leigh Road based showroom during this Autumn and Winter.

“As well as being dangerous, badly worn tyres can lead to drivers facing fines of up to £2,500 and three penalty points on their licences, so it really is worth making regular checks,” explained Davie.

Tyre Safety Month is organised by TyreSafe and runs throughout October. This year's campaign calls for car owners to commit to taking the ‘20p pledge' and check their tyre tread depth using a 20 pence piece. The simple test can be used to determine the legal limit for tyre tread, which is 1.6mm (half way up the raised perimeter of the coin) across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its whole circumference. “We hope everyone will support us to help make our community a safer place,” added Davie.
