Santa Fe, NM (PRWEB) October 25, 2012
St. John's College is proud to announce the creation of the New Mexico Odyssey Grant, available to New Mexico high school graduates and veterans. The $7,500 grants (per year) will work in tandem with generous need-based financial aid already in place. Because St. John's is a private school, New Mexico students do not qualify for New Mexico Legislative Lottery Scholarships. St. John's developed the Odyssey Grant to make it possible for qualified New Mexico students to stay in New Mexico and attend a world-class liberal arts college.
Named after Homer's Odyssey, which students read freshmen year, the grant is an embodiment of St. John's commitment to New Mexico students. Where the book chronicles a journey leading back to a place of origin, St. John's encourages New Mexico's best and brightest students to pursue their educational journey at home.
St. John's College is the only liberal arts college in New Mexico. Its distinctive academic program features an integrated liberal arts and sciences curriculum centered on the reading and discussion of the “Great Books” of Western Civilization. These books have stood the test of time across the subjects of mathematics, philosophy, social and natural sciences, history, literature, theology, and music. Nearly 40% of the curriculum is math-and science-based. St. John's College, Santa Fe, was recently ranked “Most Rigorous College” in the U.S. by Newsweek/The Daily Beast.
The college is consistently noted for its progressive approach to liberal education, which challenges students to find their own perspectives on the enduring social, political, and spiritual issues of civilization. Graduates go on to successful careers in law, medicine, business, communications, education, technology, and scientific research, among many others.
All New Mexico residents within three years of high school graduation or successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) tests are eligible. This includes:
- Home-schooled students who can provide verification of completion of an appropriate program
- Military veterans who have met any of these requirements within three years of honorable or medical discharge from service.
