New York Personal Injury Lawyer Urges People Who May Have Been Injected with Tainted Steroid to be Watchful for Symptoms of Fungal Meningitis
New York personal injury lawyer David Perecman urges patients who received epidural steroid injections to be on the lookout for symptoms of fungal meningitis. New York reported one case of infection.
New York, NY (PRWEB) October 25, 2012
As of October 22, a total of 282 cases of fungal meningitis from tainted steroid medication shots were reported, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Cases have been identified in 16 states, including one in New York and three in New Jersey. A total of 23 people have died. New York personal injury lawyer David Perecman urges people who may be infected with fungal meningitis to be watchful for symptoms.
According to The New York Times, more than 17,000 vials of a steroid injection linked to the deadly meningitis outbreak were sent to clinics in 23 states. New York was one of the states that received shipments of the single-dose vials of the steroid, which is used to ease back pain.
“People who may be infected should look out for symptoms of fungal meningitis,” said David Perecman. “The earlier they are treated, the better.”
Symptoms may appear gradually and can be very mild at first. Typical meningitis symptoms include headache, fever, nausea, and stiffness of the neck. People who have fungal meningitis may also experience confusion, dizziness, and discomfort from bright lights. Only one or two of these symptoms may be present.
A connection was made between the contaminated drug and a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy called the New England Compounding Center (NECC), said The New York Times.
“Currently, compounding pharmacies are not regulated as closely as drug manufacturers, nor are their products subject to FDA approval,” said Perecman. “But, pharmacists and pharmacy facilities have the ultimate responsibility for ensuring that the drugs they dispense are safe. Recent reports are indicating that state health regulators had concerns about the NECC as early as 2002.”
