Speak Your Silence Goes Interactive To Conquer The Stigma Of Child Sexual Abuse
New web-based platform gets people talking and provides free counseling for individuals affected.
Boise, ID (PRWEB) October 24, 2012
Talking about child sexual abuse is not easy. It can be so awkward and embarrassing that it rarely comes up in conversation. Speak Your Silence, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, has partnered with Business Psychology Associates, a national network of more than 1,500 professional counselors, to conquer the stigma of child sexual abuse by breaking the ice, sparking conversation and providing free counseling for individuals affected. Through its innovative and interactive online fundraising platform called “Outspoken”, Speak Your Silence makes it possible for anyone to rally around this cause in fun, interesting ways while also helping to provide free counseling for those affected by sexual abuse.
Outspoken is the world's first crowdfunding platform devoted exclusively to the cause of child sexual abuse. It is the brainchild of Commit 65, a 65-day world record flight attempt campaign that Speak Your Silence was originally founded upon and continues to work toward completing. Outspoken's purpose is two-fold, serving not only as a fundraising platform, but also as a tool to conquer the stigma one conversation at a time. Whether hosting an Outspoken campaign by running a marathon, breaking a world record, or simply sharing one's own story, Speak Your Silence designates 100% of publicly raised funds to it's counseling program.
“I was molested by a family friend at age six and kept it secret nearly twenty years. Conversation and counseling are what changed my life.” said Speak Your Silence Founder and CEO, Matt Pipkin. “Our vision is to take this from being socially taboo to being a cause that people love to support. Conversation is the solution. It restores lives and also prevents abuse from occurring in the future.”
There are an estimated 39 million adult survivors of child sexual abuse in the U.S. alone. One is four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused prior to age 18. Most will never talk about it. “We're asking people to join us by breaking the ice and sparking conversation, hosting an Outspoken campaign on our website at http://www.speakyoursilence.org/outspoken.” said Pipkin.
Speak Your Silence's counseling program is grant-based and offers counseling services to selected and placed individuals who have been affected by child sexual abuse. Each grant recipient will receive 10 weeks of free one-on-one counseling sessions, as well as a Speak Your Silence journal for keeping a personal record of the life-changing journey.
People are encouraged to join the cause in any way they see fit; run a race, grow a beard, host a party, or simply share their story.
