Michael Cullen is an Australian singer-songwriter who has been active in the music scene since 1990. "Love Transmitter," his first solo record, is being released in the US for the first time after being remastered. “It's emotionally charged but sexy too, I hope. I attempt to create an emotional hyper-reality in a song, where nothing matters for the listener while the song is playing except what is going on in the song,” states Cullen. His music has been described as an infectious mixture of alternative, indie pop, goth and punk. Cullen's deep resonant voice and intensity of his performance often result in comparisons to artists like Nick Cave, Joy Division, and Leonard Cohen.
"Love Transmitter" has been declared one of the Top 20 best Australian albums of all time by Tomatrax Music Blog. Although it is all Cullen's original music, the album was the brainchild of a partnership with his producer, Tim Powles of the legendary Australian rock band, The Church. Cullen comments, “I played the guitars, most of the bass and sang. Tim created the soundscapes, played the drums and drafted some of his talented comrades like Dave Skeet to add tasteful things here and there.” From start to finish the album is filled with dirty guitar, hypnotic rhythms and deep, brooding vocals. The third track on the album, "All Used Up," throws you right into the heart of Cullen's energy from the beginning. It features echoey, beatles-esque vocals and punchy drums. Other outstanding tracks such as "Transmission" and "One Is Still My Number" have at turns scorching and spiky guitar combined with deep down driving bass, delivering a dark feel, a bastard cross between punk and blues. Every track on this album remakes these genres for the listener in a way that is fresh and addictive.
"Michael Cullen's music is reminiscent of bands such as Joy Division, The Birthday Party and the Triffids to name a few. He manages to combine the best bits of each of these artists to come up with something distinctive of his own. The quality of the record is further enhanced by the production work of The Church's Tim Powles." - Curio
"Love Transmitter" was produced by Tim Powles and recorded at his Spacejunk studio in Sydney, Australia. Joining them in the studio were Dave Skeet (vocals, organ), Jon Butler (drums, percussion) and Daniel Sutherland (beats and loops, treated piano).
