Skadden and Equal Justice Works Fellows Join Swords to Plowshares

Law fellowships help serve more veterans with disabilities.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (PRWEB) October 24, 2012

Swords to Plowshares welcomes Skadden Fellow Brad Adams and Equal Justice Works Fellow Austin Baumgarten, who is sponsored by Greenberg Traurig, LLP.

Skadden Fellow Brad Adams is a recent graduate of Harvard Law School and an Army Reserve veteran who served in Afghanistan. His fellowship will focus on expansion of legal services to low-income and homeless veterans.

“I am really excited to be working at Swords to support my fellow veterans. I am very grateful to the folks at Skadden for making it possible,” said Adams.

Equal Justice Works Fellow Austin Baumgarten is a UC Davis Law School graduate who previously interned at Swords to Plowshares. Baumgarten's fellowship will combine research and advocacy on behalf of veterans with psychiatric disabilities seeking military discharge upgrades in order to access needed benefits.

"I became aware of the effects of PTSD on veterans at an early age through the service of a close family friend and am honored to be back at Swords to Plowshares where I can help more veterans,” said Baumgarten.

“We are thrilled to have the support of the Skadden Fellowship Foundation, Equal Justice Works and Greenberg Traurig, LLP,” said Teresa Panepinto, Legal Director of Swords to Plowshares. “Brad and Austin are critical additions to our small team of attorneys who provided free legal services to nearly 700 Bay Area veterans last year.”

“Every day at Swords to Plowshares we see how access to mental health care and disability benefits can transform lives and end needless suffering,” said Panepinto. “We are fortunate to have Brad and Austin help us further our mission, effect policy change and increase the number of veterans we are able to help avoid or escape poverty by securing the benefits they earned.”
